In reply to Neil.

He went right up from the bottom with screws to grab the top and attach it to the cabinets. He jigged the boards together, but then used regular screws to attach it to the cabs from beneath.

I’m sorry if this has already been posted, but there are too many to read through them all! ;) How did John secure the top to the cabinets? Screw from the top through the boards into the cabinets or from underneath using the jig to drill through cabinets then up into the boards? Many thanks, love your work!

In reply to Heather.

That could work too! We just wanted to make sure the cracks where you join them wouldn’t look bare (unstained) if we couldn’t reach them after it was assembled.

I was wondering: why did you sand and stain before joining the pieces? We were considering joining them together and then sanding and staining the whole top together to improve the evenness of the surface. Any reason you’d discourage that?

I am only 5’2″ that is why sitting up high is uncomfortable for me. how did you solve that problem with the cabinets you got? thanks!

In reply to Jennifer.

Hmm, I think if it’s thick like framing lumber you should be all set. We used it for years without any dinging (but ours was really dense – it’s meant to hold houses up so it’s really strong stuff).

We are currently working on a similar project, and my husband bought pine. He is concerned though that the surface won’t be hard enough to do work and crafts on, and will ding easily. Did you ever notice this problem?

Thanks!
