In reply to Sarah b.

It’s always something to worry about if you’re in a home of that era! Definitely learn about safety precautions (we researched lead too, etc).

In reply to Angela Kintner.

You just want to rub all surfaces down with a rag moistened with it. Then let it dry and you’re good to go. It usually looks the same afterwards (sometimes a tad more dried out) but it has stripped all the oils off. Hope it helps.

How much do I need to rub it? Wipe it on, wipe it off? What should the finish look like after the deglosser.
Scared that I’m not doing enough and that my paint won’t look good!
Thank you!

In reply to Angela Kintner.

You can probably get away with using a liquid deglosser (no sanding) and then one coat of stainblocking primer and two coats of latex semi-gloss paint. Make sure the primer is stainblocking or the oak color can bleed through (completely maddening)! Good luck!

How much do you need to sand it before painting? I notice you use Olympic Premium Semi Gloss paint – do you paint two coats?
Any other tips?
Thank you! LOVE your blog – long time regular reader.

In reply to Crib Sheets.

We’ll be tiling the gray stuff (that’s cement board) and keeping the grellow walls – then we have to paint the cabinets and we’ll probably touch up the white trim too!
