It really pops with black porch furniture and yellow pillows and flowers. Was going to post a pix but couldn’t figure it out, thanks for the inspiration! Love it!

Yes, I’d try going over it one more time if you’re unhappy with it and just do a super thin and even coat (exterior paint does tend to be thicker/trickier). You can try a brush (a thin coat is key!) but you might see brush strokes, so in that case, just follow that with a foam roller to get it even more thinly and evenly applied. Hope it helps!

I know this is an older post, but I just repainted my front door yesterday following your tutorial and I’m looking for some advice.

I ended up doing 4 coats (bright blue/teal over what was a maroon door) using a foam roller (and 2″ angled brush as needed). Today it’s all dry and I can see some of the trail of the foam roller, especially at the top half of the door. Any suggestions? I’m wondering if I should go back over with one more coat and try to be meticulous about it being evenly and thinly applied. Should I use just a brush this time and not the roller? Also, I’ve never used exterior paint before, but it’s definitely thicker than what I’m used to and I wonder if that might be part of it.

I would check out a glass company (just google for one in your area or check the yellow pages) – they can make custom pieces of glass and sometimes it’s not too pricey!

I’d love to find somewhere where we can just buy a new glass part to put in the door, rather than replacing the entire door itself to update it. Any idea where you can get something like that? I’ve looked online but not even sure what to call it! thx!

In reply to Emily.

I’ve heard that too! I don’t know if it’s the combo of the roller with thinner paint (there are theories that a roller can rile up paint and cause bubbles a lot if the paint is thin) so perhaps that’s it? Temperature also can do it (was it exceptionally hot or humid today?). I would sand just the bubbles down lightly and then use a brush to apply the paint, but of course with the brush some folks complain of brush strokes (super thin and even coats are key – I just painted the front door with a brush only but did really light coats and it looks great). Hope it helps!

When I googled around it looks like a lot of people say that the foam roller is the culprit. Any thoughts?
